BYD recently announced the official name of its first electric pickup truck as “SHARK” in English, representing the aquatic creature. At present, the Chinese name for the vehicle has not been disclosed. The vehicle is constructed on the DMO Super Hybrid Off-Road platform and is primarily intended for the international market. It is expected to be officially launched in the near future.
The pickup truck showcases a double-row seating arrangement with straight side lines, along with the inclusion of side steps. A gantry frame is present in the cargo bed of the truck. According to reports, the dimensions of this vehicle are expected to surpass those of the well-known Toyota Hilux.
Previously, official spy photos of the pickup truck were released. The overall design of the vehicle leans towards a rugged style, emphasizing muscularity and creating an off-road look. At the front, it has a prominent grille and an 8-shaped headlight design, with a rugged front bumper below. According to the teaser image released by the company, the vehicle’s front face presents a noticeable central grille design, accompanied by a metal skid plate decoration located beneath the front bumper. The LED headlights feature a vertical arrangement, with C-shaped daytime running lights surrounding them, while maintaining a seamless design in the upper section.
On the side of the vehicle, the BYD SHARK adopts a rugged line design, highlighting a strong sense of power. Simultaneously, the vehicle incorporates the widely used double-row seating arrangement typically seen in passenger pickup trucks, along with the inclusion of a gantry frame and side steps.
In terms of the interior, the vehicle’s interior is similar to the style of the BYD Tang EV5, featuring mostly straight lines. The steering wheel area follows a typical familial style, with a floating-style instrument panel and a rotatable central control screen. It is worth mentioning that there are many mechanical buttons near the electronic gear lever of the vehicle.
Based on official information, the BYD SHARK will have the DMO Super Hybrid Off-Road platform, which comprises several components. These include a new hybrid non-load-bearing architecture, a double-layer high-safety blade battery, an off-road-specific longitudinal EHS hybrid system, the world’s first off-road-specific rear-drive electric powertrain, an off-road-specific longitudinal engine, and compatibility with the Yun-Nian-P intelligent hydraulic body control system.
The designers have developed the Yun-Nian-P intelligent hydraulic body control system to enhance vehicle control and provide driving assistance to the driver when navigating rough roads.
This vehicle is based on the DMO Super Hybrid Off-Road platform. According to previously released information, both the engine and EHS hybrid system of the DMO platform adopt a longitudinal layout. The 1.5T and 2.0T longitudinal engines, supported by the DMO platform, are high-power versions specifically designed for plug-in hybrid vehicles.
These two engines incorporate advanced technologies, including high compression ratio, high thermal efficiency, and a high-pressure fuel injection system. In terms of parameters, the 1.5T engine has a maximum power of 143 kW (194 horsepower), while the 2.0T engine has a maximum power of 180 kW (245 horsepower). While achieving high performance, the DMO system also achieves low energy consumption. As standard, SiC chips are integrated into the electronic control and power generation system controllers across the entire range, resulting in an efficiency of up to 99.5%. The pickup truck achieves a comprehensive fuel consumption of 7.8 L/100km and a comprehensive range of up to 1200 km. We will continue to provide updates on the specific power information of this pickup truck.
